Water Contaminated with Gasoline Poses Health Hazards

GMA 24 Oras reported: Brgy Bangkal, Makati City was placed under State of Calamity due to gasoline leak. The said gasoline leak started in West Tower Condominium two months ago. After inspection of city government, most of the deep wells and poso negro (manual deep water pump) are contaminated with water.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exposures to gasoline are through inhalation, skin a gallon of gasolineabsorption, ingestion, skin and/or eye contact. So contamination of water with gasoline is really a health hazard because we are using / ingesting water on a regular basis.

Symptoms includes: irritation eyes, skin, mucous membrane; dermatitis; headache, lassitude (weakness, exhaustion), blurred vision, dizziness, slurred speech, confusion, convulsions; chemical pneumonitis (aspiration liquid); possible liver, kidney damage; [potential occupational carcinogen]

The target organs are eyes, skin, respiratory system, central nervous system, liver, kidneys. It causes liver and kidney cancer in animals.

Gasoline and water are immiscible liquid. Gasoline floats on top because its has a lower density and it evaporates quickly even at normal room temperature. Gas contamination may be removed by slightly heating the water or letting it stand for a long period. However, this method is not recommended, gasoline additives and other impurities might be left behind.

Authorities are now conducting necessary measures to solve the gasoline leak problem.
