Juan went to sari-sari store to buy some food and cook it for dinner. Getting some eggs was in his priority but he will buy only if there are broken eggs available.
Why buy broken eggs if there are available whole eggs?
The prevailing medium egg cost is 5.50 pesos each while broken eggs sell three pieces for ten pesos, size classification does not apply for broken eggs. Buying three broken eggs instead of three whole eggs is cheaper by 6.50 pesos. Affordable price is tempting cause a little savings might be enough to buy other necessities.
Is buying of broken eggs safe? Is the saving of 6.50 pesos worth?
Egg is an excellent medium for microbial growth. Salmonella bacteria responsible for many stomach related outbreaks are often found in fresh eggs. If the safety of whole fresh eggs cannot be assured then how can we ascertain the safety of broken eggs.
Egg shells are fragile, slight forces such as dent, drop and hammer can break it easily. Then it will be contaminated with microorganisms and other foreign objects. Contaminants may come from handler’s dirty hands, egg shell, trays, storage area, transport vehicles and surrounding air.
Harmful bacteria grow at exponential rate in a protein rich egg (protein is the bacteria’s main source of energy). Its number might be enough to cause adverse effects before reaching your plate. To make the scenario more scary – ten Salmonella bacteria are enough to make a person ill. The 6.50 pesos savings is not enough for medicines and hospitalization.
Buying whole eggs is a safe choice although its not true at all times.
