Shrimps are so so delicious. A boiled shrimp with onions and salt without other ingredients will do. However, I never like buying it because the price is very steep. The larger the prawn the more expensive it become.
Some of the possible reasons are:
1) They use cheap packaging materials. Most of the crackers are packed in cheap polyethylene packaging with rough label design. This strategy save cost.
2) Manufacturers never use shrimp, only shrimp flavors or artificial prawn flavors are used for processing. See the package ingredient listing to prove it yourself.
3) Some prawn crackers use real shrimp but they are only using the shrimp heads. Prawn cracker was invented to make use of the shrimp heads, considered as waste material before. Some use cheap small shrimps as alternative.
Those are the reasons why most of the prawn crackers are so cheap and not even taste like real shrimp. So if you want a premium quality prawn crackers, look for the expensive brands. Processing your own kropeks is a good alternative. Material sourcing and control of recipe are within your hand.
