Soapy Margarine

This margarine taste a bit soapy. Well. I am not surprised.

Margarine. Base on wikipedia and youtube, it is emulsion of water in oil. Eighty percent of which is fat, 16 % water and the rest are others that perhaps added to prolong shelf life and make it taste better. Basic formula as it suggest, taste bland. The tasty and popular brand you know might be less or healthier than your favorite cooking oil. Maybe more dangerous.

Margarine and soap share the same key ingredient. It is not surprising for an oil refinery to produce margarine and soap. In other cases, a margarine manufacturer making soap as alternative income source and vice versa. The two products, clearly, need separate processing plants. However, they may choose do it with minimal walling. Separate buildings but in proximity. Then same truck for logistics. Strict protocols are needed to prevent margarine getting soapy taste and odor. Soap on the other hand, getting some margarine attributes may not be a big deal.

I actually saw a company making both at the same time. So the scenario above is not based on science and speculations.

Even if that is not the case, a not well protected and handled product may get undesirable flavor whenever given opportunity. Speaking of margarine, they are usually plain wrapped with wax paper and seen in chilled section of groceries. In any case the logistic, grocery owner or the consumer do the forbidden thing, it gonna have the unpleasant soap taste.

From the website canitgobad.net, one of margarine signs of spoilage is the soapy taste.  Soap is made from oil through saponification process. Random presence of alkali and heat  is likely to trigger this process.

Eating Rice with Star Margarine

For me, star margarine is an excellent bread spread. Apply a moderate coat on bread loaf and sprinkle some sugar. The mix of margarine salty taste and sweetness of sugar is perfect. I will refuse consecutive servings of peanut and mayonnaise sandwich but never do it against margarine sandwich.

Another popular use of margarine is for cooking purposes. They claimed an egg fried with margarine has a better taste. Any food sautéed with margarine instead of regular cooking oil has better flavor too.

When I was still a child, the company had an advertisement, the star rice. Mix a specific quantity of star margarine to measured rice.I am still seeing the ad on star margarine label with different recipe.

I was a product fan so I tried the idea immediately. My head started to float from the first spoon up to the last. I still managed to finished my meal cause mom will surely get angry in case.

I bought star margarine for my “Cooking Egg on Paper Tray” experiment. My better half got some margarine and mixed it to our son’s meal. He finished it with no comments and objections, no words at all. It seemed he like it.

I tried the idea again. The same thing happened, my head seemed floating while eating. I wonder why our son liked it. For me, it is excellent for bread but not for rice.

Cooking Egg on A Piece of Paper

One of the Boy Scouts training is cooking with improvised materials. Cooking rice on a fresh piece of large bamboo. Wrapping eggs in a wet newspaper and broiling. Cooking eggs on a piece of paper instead of frying pan.

I personally witnessed the last cooking style but never got a hands on experience. Mom never allowed me to become a Boy Scout.

Cooking eggs on a piece of paper seems impossible. The paper is thin. The heat from flame or ember will burn it. Or, the moisture from egg will sip through making it weak and break afterward. Either of the two will make the egg go to waste.

It is possible with the use of Star Margarine.

This is how it is done.

1) Get a piece of clean paper. Fold the four sides upward to form a paper tray enough to hold a single egg content. Two eggs in on paper tray is not recommended.

2) Get a star margarine. Apply a thin coating coating on paper. Paper should be covered completely.

3) Improvise a material to hold the paper tray. It could be a small bamboo or wooden tray similar to a grill. It should have a 12 inches handle. Soak it with water and rinse before use.

4) Prepare a small wood fire.

5) Break egg on paper tray. Place the tray on wooden grill. Then bring it on top of wood fire. The flame should barely touch the tray. Moved the grill continuously from left to right and vice versa to prevent paper from burning.

The eggs should be cooked within 10 to 15 minutes, depending on heat and cook’s expertise. Burning paper is normal for the first timer.

The margarine will be absorbed by the paper tray making it water resistant and burn resistant. It will not prevent the egg from sticking to paper. Scrape the cooked egg gently to avoid eating pieces of paper.
