Hals for Protecting Light Sensitive Food Products

Wines and most medicines are packed in amber glass bottle. Why?  Because they are light sensitive. The probability of undergoing degradation is high. Amber colored bottle blocks the flow of light from outside environment to inside contents.  Light induced chemical reactions may result to  bleaching of green vegetables, oxidation of vitamin C and carotenoid pigments, destruction of riboflavin in milk and discoloration of fresh meats.
However, a customer may wish to see the content color of red wine or medicine. A red looking wine packed in clear glass bottle might be more appealing than amber packed one.  Identification of spoiled or low-quality product is easier when the package content can be seen clearly.  Buying a cracker or chip in a see-through bag is easy. Those with broken or pulverized contents can easily be avoided. molecule
Packing food items in a clear package may now be possible without the fear of food degradation. Those unwanted chemical reaction can be avoided by using Univil® 4050.  The first ever Basf  hindered anime light stablizer  (hals) permitted for food contact. European Union approved it for all types of polymer and food applications. The maximum migration limit is 50 parts per billion (ppb). United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for use – maximum of 0.25 % for polypropylene (pp), maximum of 0.5 % for polystyrene  and upper limit of 0.5% for styrene block copolymer and acrylonitrile copolymers.
Hals is a polymer stabilizer. It has the ability to scavenge free radicals produced by weathering. It protect the polymer itself and protect the contents indirectly. The use of Univil 4050 result in a longer lasting packaging material and pose less risk to plastic manufacturers. Correct me I am wrong!
