Chocolate is poisonous to dogs because of the compound called theobromine. The substance belongs to xanthine group. A dosage of 100-150 mg/kg body weight will cause a toxic reaction. Actual chocolate dosage may vary according to type and other included ingredients.

Coffee is also toxic to dogs due to caffeine. Just like theobromine, caffeine also belongs to xanthine group of compounds. However, dogs will not eat coffee in pure form unless force feeding is done.

When I said coffee and chocolate, these also includes other products containing theobromine and caffeine.
